According to the founder of the web protocol, Vint Cerf, the world is now running a shortage of IP addresses. The web protocol begun as an experiment in 1977, with a total of 4.3 billion IP addresses. Due to the enormous growth of web and overall Internet usage, the number of IP addresses is expected to run out within weeks. Fear not, a new version of the web protocol is under way, which will offer trillions of addresses.
